Tom Ford gets cozy and approachable for fall 2015

Tom Ford’s 2015 Winter Collection for Men is a study in reinvention. The collection is, in some ways, a take on classic London Mod, all while staying true to Ford’s signature, structured style. During the private press preview, signature dark suits were styled casually with sneakers, dark roll necks and sunglasses, very 60s cool. Several pieces stayed true to Ford’s love for boldness, such as the stunning, velvet tuxedo jackets emblazoned with monochromatic Op Art patterns.

Ford, born in Austin, Texas and now living in Italy with husband, Richard Buckley and their 2 year old son, was the creative director for Gucci from 1994-2004. During that time, he completely rejuvenated the brand, and is credited with bringing the fashion mega house back from the brink of bankruptcy. Since his time at Gucci, he has enjoyed much success as a pioneer of menswear. He also has lines of eyewear, accessories and beauty products.

The new collection wasn’t all evening wear, though. It also featured sneakers, which have been a surprising success for the brand. Alongside these casual-cool tennis shoes, were gorgeously tailored, charcoal grey coats, long and short shearlings in both suede and denim outers. Preppy plaid scarves were paired with trim, tailored suits and rich toned, wool sweaters.

While Tom Ford has become the evening wear go to fashion house for today’s wealthy, young, elite, the pieces in the Winter ’15 collection are incredibly approachable. The luxurious shearling jacket, a sure must-have piece, were styled with slim cut denim jeans. Ford reportedly explained during the preview, that the jeans will come in three different cut options, not intended to offer choices in shape, but rather to allow for the best fit on a variety of different body shapes. This direction will undoubtedly serve to make Ford’s brand even more accessible, as the approach is far less limiting in terms of who can wear the collection. Fur-lined, hooded, long winter coats were another casual staple featured in the collection. Functional and yet effortlessly cool, it’s pieces like this that branch the divide between Ford’s investment banking clientele, and his more everyday admirers.

Whatever the future holds, this versatile collection wears many hats, just like the man himself. It’s an exciting addition to 2015’s fashion line-up and one that is sure to continue Ford’s forward momentum as Menswear’s man of the moment.
